DKP work featured in Resilient Miami exhibit at Coral Gables Museum

DKP work will be on display at the Coral Gables Museum as part of an exhibit kicking off this week entitled "Miami 2100: Envisioning a Resilient Second Century". The exhibited materials will include renderings and research produced during the Seven 50 project and Dutch Dialogues Charrette, which was presented at the South East Florida Regional Climate Compact in October.

The exhibit, presented by the Florida International University (FIU) School of Architecture, will feature work produced by local professional as well as research developed during the last 3 years, by students in FIU SOA's ongoing Sea Level Rise Studio.

Check out the exhibit for some insight in to how Miami will deal with the critical issue of climate change, and sea level rise specifically!

DKP Designs Regional Urban Design Guidelines for the former Fort Ord, Monterey, CA

The DKP team is working on the development of urban design guidelines for the areas formerly known as the Fort Ord Military base in Monterey, CA. This video provides a brief history of Fort Ord and an introduction to the upcoming charrette process through which the Regional Urban Design Guidelines will be developed.

San Marcos Says New Code Draft on the Right Track

The DKP team is back from a charrette in San Marcos, Texas. DKP leads a multi-disciplinary team to create a Unified Development Ordinance and system of pre-approved plans for urban extension and compact urbanism. New development will be channeled away from the aquifer that feeds San Marcos’s crystal clear river. Over 350 people attended the charrette and provided their input. By far the majority of work-in-progress attendees agreed that the code was headed in the right direction.

City of Carlsbad Work-In-Progress Presentation "sparks dreams"

The Dover-Kohl team recently completed a charrette in the City of Carlsbad, California, to create a master plan for the Village and Barrio districts. Over 500 people attended and provided their input over the course of two weeks. 91% of work-in-progress attended agreed that the plan was headed in the right direction.

UT San Diego spoke highly of the presentation, saying that it "sparks dreams".

DKP at Climate Leadership Conference

Dover, Kohl & Partners joins Arcadis Engineering and the City of Miami Beach at the 6th Annual Southeast Florida Regional Climate Leadership Summit today to present adaptive concepts. As part of the Southeast Florida Resilient Redesign charrette DKP worked with Dutch Engineers on the Virginia Key Boulevard Levee concept among other ideas for retrofit, retreat and reinforcement. Miami's first coastal levee could provide a bulwark against storm surge for the entire city as well as a new, higher-elevation, network of walkable communities.

DKP Plans a New Resort Community on Smith Lake in Alabama

Dover, Kohl & Partners joined Gary Justiss and Mike Watkins to plan a new community on Smith Lake, Alabama. The one-week charrette was hosted by the Bailey and Wood families. The new 160+ acre community (name to be decided) will give Smith Lake its first walkable center. Homes along the ridges will be connected by a series of paths and within walking distance of a range of greens, playgrounds and parks. The work-in-progress on July 30 attracted over 150 people including the Mayor of Cullman, Chamber of Commerce representatives and many potential new residents of the lake community.

Wheeler District: OKC's Next Great Urban Neighborhood

The DKP team completed a charrette last week for Wheeler District in Oklahoma City. Wheeler District is a new infill community that is poised to become Oklahoma City’s next great walkable neighborhood. Over 500 people participated in the week-long charrette hosted by Humphreys Development Company.

Dover-Kohl Projects Receive CNU Charter Awards

Three projects that Dover-Kohl was involved in received Charter Awards from the Congress for the New Urbanism this week.

The Columbia Pike Initiative won the "Best Corridor Plan" Award for its ongoing transformation of a  suburban strip corridor into a multi-story, mixed-use, mixed-income neighborhood. Dover Kohl led an intensive public charrette process that resulted in the adoption of a plan and form-based code in 2003. For the first time in 40 years, mixed-use developments were built, sidewalks were widened, and pedestrian-friendly lighting was installed. In 2011 Dover-Kohl led a follow-up charrette focusing on the multi-family residential portions of the corridor with a special focus on affordability. The result is a comprehensive vision that promotes new infill development as part of a walkable, transit-oriented community, while ensuring the continued availability of affordable housing.

The Curridabat Master Plan won the "Best City Plan" Award for a plan that sets the pace for a Latin-American adoption of CNU Charter Principles. Dover-Kohl collaborated with lead firm Castillo Arquitectos to produce a vision for a reimagined city focused on urbanism and walkability, and resulting in the adoption of the first Form-Based Code in Costa Rica.

Jean Lafitte Tomorrow won a "Special Jury Award" for its locally-driven resiliency plan for this low-lying Gulf Coast community. The Dover-Kohl led plan for Jean Lafitte recommends the slow retreat to the heart-of-town by facilitating the voluntary relocation of residents from indefensible, low-lying areas into more compact, walkable, mixed-use communities with enough investment to warrant reinforcement. The plan was adopted unanimously in 2013 and played a key role in getting Jean Lafitte's proposed levee added to the Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority's Coastal Master Plan.
