Montgomery Downtown Plan & Code

The Downtown Montgomery Plan is a blueprint to guide infill development and redevelopment. Understanding that Downtown has many property owners, the plan is intended to assist the city with coordinating both public and private development efforts Downtown. The City of Montgomery has taken the initial step in providing increased certainty by adopting the SmartCode as part of the City's zoning ordinance. The visualizations, plans, and recommendations found in the Downtown Plan are the result of extensive public input from Montgomery residents, business owners, and community leaders. Over 850 community members participated in the September 2006 charrette.

The Plan was unanimously adopted by City Council in February 2007.  Following the Plan’s adoption, the City Council unanimously adopted the SmartCode as the mandatory zoning code for Downtown in May 2007.  Construction of the Court Square Plaza was completed in early 2007, making it the first new urban space of its kind on a major U.S. city street in over fifty years.  It is now a popular case study for transportation engineers seeking to rediscover the art of placemaking. Plan implementation is continuing and today Downtown Montgomery is once again emerging as a vibrant  place with new restaurants, shops, and housing.
